Houston’s African American Library at the Gregory School is one of two hundred African American museums across the U.S. and Canada preserving, celebrating, and promoting black culture and history. Since 2009, the African American Library at the Gregory School has formed part of the Special Collections Division of the Houston Public Library system, relying on mundane items such as photographs, written papers and records, and other trinkets to populate their collections. Located in Historic Freedmen’s Town, the dual-purpose cultural center and research institute was once Houston’s first African-American public school. Tracing the long and complex road to the museum’s 2009 opening ceremony reveals a pronounced concern with community involvement and historical preservation.
